What's New at One Hen
One Hen turns One Year Old.
May 15 marked the anniversary of onehen.org’s launch at City Year Boston headquarters in 2008, where students from the Roxbury afterschool Starfish program inaugurated the site (see photo below). On May 19th One Hen, Inc. received its 501(c)(3) determination, and in June won both the Massachusetts Book Award and Computerworld’s 21st Century Achievement Award for its website.
One Hen, Inc. Board names Amma Sefa-Dedeh Executive Director:
Amma Sefa-Dedeh, a Ghanaian MBA graduate from Babson College, became One Hen’s first Executive Director on June 15th a month after completing her degree. Ms. Sefa-Dedeh began volunteering with One Hen at its launch in May 2008 and joined the organization’s start-up management team in November as Program Director. Her new role as ED makes her One Hen’s first, full-time, paid staff member. What’s her first challenge? Designing One Hen curriculum for BELL National summer school in July!
The Wellesley Townsman newspaper wrote about her appointment. Read More...
One Hen Pilots 16 Session Curriculum with BELL National
This summer, One Hen will pilot its new 16 session curriculum with leading after school program BELL National at three schools in Boston. 120 children will participate in this interactive program and will explore how they can make a difference in their own life by working hard to achieve their dreams and also make a difference in the life of others by giving back.
Most exciting of all, the program will set up a microfinance agency which will give the children small loans to start jewelry making businesses. The young micro-entrepreneurs will offer these for sale to parents as they pick up their children after school and through this process learn critical skills in financial responsibility that will help them to succeed after school. At the end of the program the children will decide how much of the money to Spend, Save and Give and what cause to give towards. Read More...
