Classroom Clucks
Author:Daisy
Grade 3, Jesse Ketchum.
My school, raised about $4000 and will get the same amount from a company for a total of $8000 for Africa. The grade sevens and eights had bake sales, movies, donations, and more. Once they raised around $600 from the school only in pennies to buy water cleaning chemicals and sent them too.

Teacher's Quote

What is One Hen?
One Hen, Inc. a 501(c)(3) organization, is a provider of enrichment curriculum that introduces elementary school children to concepts of financial responsibility, personal initiative, global awareness and the value of giving back. Our mission is to help children become global citizens who succeed in school and beyond and marry that success to helping others.

One Hen achieves this by equipping teachers with Internet-based and hands-on resources and activities that bring world issues into the classroom and allow children to learn through participation, play with concepts, and make a difference for others and for themselves. The first One Hen curriculum teaches microfinance and entrepreneurship through real-life stories and a virtual microentrepreneurs’ market, that lets kids participate in sending real loans to real entrepreneurs (www.onehen.org). A second One Hen curriculum based on the forthcoming book, “The Good Garden,” to launch in Fall 2010, will introduce children to the concept of sustainable agriculture and food security.

What's New at One Hen

One Hen Enrichment Curriculum Pilot in Boston Inspires Inner-City Students.
bell_summer7.jpgThe pilot of our enrichment curriculum implemented in three inner-city BELL locations in Boston successfully introduced students to entrepreneurship and giving back, as featured in the Boston Herald. Children learned how business works through stories of micro-entrepreneurs from developing countries who, with very small loans and hard work pulled themselves out of poverty. From the results of this pilot we are even more convinced that elementary school years are the time to seed an entrepreneurial vision in the lives of children, especially those from disadvantaged communities.  We watched with joy as students became captivated by the world of work, proud of the small businesses they launched with $10 loans, and more aware of needs in their communities and how they could play a role in meeting them. Read more about the results of the program or see more pictures of children learning and having fun.

One Hen expands After-School Programs with City Year and BELL
This fall 14 City Year New York locations will be using the One Hen curriculum with elementary school children in their Starfish program. BELL National will also be running One Hen programs in 10 after-school locations all over the country. The after school curriculum teaches students how business works through hands-on activities and the simple stories of microentrepreneurs. One Hen continues to complete the virtuous cycle of microfinance by matching real loans to real entrepreneurs through schoolchildren playing interactive games and investing “bead” winnings on www.onehen.org, and then bringing microentrepreneurs’ success stories back to classrooms to inspire more children to entrepreneurial visions for their own lives. If you would like to run a One Hen program in an after-school program, school or club, email letters@onehen.org
